If you’re looking Playa Taurito in Gran Canaria  for a sunshine-filled escape that keeps kids and teenagers entertained and adults relaxed – this review will help you decide if it’s the holiday for you.

We visited during the last week of October, (UK half term) and enjoyed warm weather, plenty of activities, and a fantastic hotel with its own water park. Our group included six tween and teenage boys aged 11–15, plus seven adults including parents and grandparents.

Read on for our guide on things to do in Playa Taurito and the surrounding areas (based on our multi-generational family experience).

What’s Playa Taurito Like?

Playa Taurito is a small, quiet and peaceful resort in the southwest of Gran Canaria, tucked between cliffs and the sea.

The resort mostly made up of hotels with only a handful of bars and one main restaurant on the seafront. It’s very compact with a lovely beach within walking distance. There are also a shops and mini markets where you can browse for souvenirs, buy food and drink, plus some clothes and footwear. Entertainment and daytime activities are mainly based at the hotels and the four or so bars along the beach front.

Depending on the holidays you enjoy, you may find there isn’t quite enough in the resort to keep you occupied (unless you are happy to sunbath and use the pools, beach and the waterpark for your holiday). However it is easy to explore other places as you can easily use buses, hire a car or take a taxi. There are also many pre-planed excursions you can book including boat trips and buggy rides. It’s worth noting it’s not easy to walk to other places from the resort.

Staying at LIVVO Lago Taurito

We based ourselves at LIVVO Lago Taurito, a family-friendly 3-star hotel set in the heart of Playa Taurito.

Why it worked for our family

My sister in law picked this hotel for our family because of the water park and the numerous activities for kids on site which included a water park, football, mini arcade, bowling and mini golf.

For our group of boys it was perfect because they could wander off together and visit the waterpark, play pool, each lunch together and have fun independently.

For our group this was ideal. However, if we had travelled with just our own two children, we might have planned more excursions and trips as the water park alone could feel repetitive after a few days.

Rooms at LIVVO Lago Taurito

The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable and well-suited to families. I would also add the rooms were basic but practical. There was a hairdryer which is always welcome. The shower was warm and powerful. I found the beds comfortable. When we had an issue with a pillow, it was quickly replaced, always a good sign of helpful service.

AI Inclusive Food and Drink

The all-inclusive food offering genuinely impressed us. It’s generally what you’d expect from a 3 star hotel. There was plenty of choice for everyone, no one went hungry! I especially enjoyed the variety of fish dishes, and breakfasts were consistently good. I’ve read reviews where people aren’t happy but I’m not quite sure what they are expecting.

Having said that by the end of 7 days, it was getting repetitive but that’s typical when you stay at a 3 star all inclusive resort – and the food is still much more varied and that what I’d eat at home!

If you fancy a change, head down to Sunset Taurito beach bar (more on that later).

Drinks included soft drinks, local wine, beer, and spirits, hot drinks and non-alcoholic options and served to 11pm.

As you find in many 3 star all inclusives nowadays, drinks are served in plastic cups .

Evening Entertainment at Playa Taurito

Evenings were relaxed and typical of family resorts.

At the hotel, we enjoyed:

  • A music quiz where you had to run to the stage to answer the question!
  • Live performances and acrobatics
  • Live music

Away from the hotel, there’s also karoke at Sunset Taurito beach bar.

Water Park: A Teen Favourite in Playa Taurito

One of the main attractions in Playa Taurito is the large water park that sits right in the centre of the resort. Many of the nearby hotels, including ours, surround the park, and guests get access as part of their stay. If you’re not staying in one of these hotels, you can still buy a day ticket.

This was by far the top highlight for all six teenage boys in our group. They spent hours on the slides, in the pools, and enjoying the sunshine. While the hotel pool itself is on the smaller side, the water park more than makes up for it.

It’s worth noting that drinks at the water park aren’t included in the all-inclusive package, but you can purchase them individually if you need to. I believe you can also purchase all inclusive at the water park separately as well.

Beautiful Playa Taurito Beach Is Just a Short Walk Away

Another perk of staying in Playa Taurito is the beach — just a short, easy walk from the hotel. We loved swimming in the warm sea, which felt amazing in October. The dark, sandy beach is clean, safe and perfect for both relaxation and water activities.

If you fancy a change from the all inclusive in the evening, head down to the Sunset Taurito beach bar on the beach front which have a great dinner menu (but they also do breakfast and lunch too).

For cocktails, Mymsy Beach is a great option and is also located on the beach.

Exploring Beyong Playa Taurito

If you like to walk from the hotel to explore places, it probably isn’t the holiday for you as the location is quite isolated. You can’t walk far along the beach or to the next resort.

However, if you’re happy to go out by bus or taxi, it’s very easy to explore further afield. Just a 5 to 10-minute walk from the hotel is a bus stop where you can catch regular buses to nearby towns. And there is plenty to explore and do.

You can also easily book excursions. There are two kiosks outside the hotel which will help you book the right excursion for you.

Our Dolphin-Spotting Boat Trip

One of the highlights of our holiday was a boat trip, which we conveniently booked through the a kiosk at the hotel.

A bus picked us up and took us to Puerto Rico, where we boarded the boat for a few hours at sea.

On the water we were lucky enough to see dolphins swimming in the distance, as well as flying fish, a fantastic experience for both teenagers and adults!

We were served lunch which was okay (chicken and potatoes). Some drinks were free but you did have to pay a Euro for a cup.

The trip also included optional activities such as a banana boat rides (a big hit with the teens and free). My son and I also had a go at parasailing, which we loved but it did mean he missed out on the free banana boat ride because there wasn’t quite enough time (which he was a bit gutted about).

There are a range of other excursions to choose from which included jet skis and buggy tours.

Visit Puerto Rico

We visited Puerto Rico, a larger resort town with a lively marina, shops, and restaurants, a great option if you want a change of pace.

It’s about 15 minutes away by bus from Taurito and €1.40 per adult each way,

Things to do in Puerto Rico:

  • Visit the marina
  • Shop at Mogan Mall
  • Explore restaurants and bars
  • Spend time at Angry Birds Activity Park (great for younger kids)

Visit Puerto de Mogán

Often called “Little Venice”, Puerto de Mogán is picturesque harbour town with a market on Fridays (although I’ve heard the market is full of tat – but you never know)

There are boat trips and bike hire (although I think you have to hire bikes for 3 days). You can also walk the pretty canals and colourful streets.

To get there take number 9 bus then swap to number 1 at Puerto Rico or get a taxi. Ask at your hotel reception for the best way to get there and up to date costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the transfer to Playa Taurito from the airport?

If you’re coming on a private transfer, it’s fairly quick about 40 to 45 minutes. If you’ve booked a shared transfer it can take quite a long time as Playa Taurito seems to be one of the last stops. We were the penultimate to be dropped off on our transfer and it took about 1 hour and 30 minutes. If it’s in your budget, I would recommend a private transfer.

Is there a gym in Playa Taurito?

There is a gym you can use if you stay at the Lago Taurito hotel at it’s sister hotel Livo Lago. Unfortunately I don’t think there is another gym in the area.  I know a gym can be very important to teenage boys. However, it is small so my gym obsessed teenager didn’t bother going on this week’s holiday.

Is there anywere to run or walk in Playa Taurito?

There aren’t not many places to walk or run. I saw many people walking up and down the beach which is enjoyable. I did run from the hotel up the paths to other hotels and back down again. If you do a couple of laps you could make it up to 5K but it’s not very picturesque (and a lot of uphill!) Due to some rockfall, the costal paths and other roads from Playa Taurito are closed off. I did see some people walk along them (maybe they jumped the official barriers) but I don’t recommend it as you don’t want to risk being injured or killed by a falling rock hitting your head!

Is Playa Taurito good for snorkelling?

Playa Taurito in Gran Canaria is fine for a casual snorkel, especially for beginners, thanks to its sheltered bay and generally calm waters. You can spot some fish, particularly around the rocky edges, but because the beach is man-made with darker sand and occasional stones, visibility isn’t always great and marine life is fairly limited. It’s better suited to relaxed swimming than standout snorkelling.

For a better experience, head just a few minutes along the coast to Puerto de Mogán, where clearer water and rocky areas attract more fish. Other good nearby options include Playa de Amadores for its clear, calm water, and quieter spots like Playa del Cura, which tend to have more marine life. Overall, while Taurito is convenient, you’ll get much better snorkelling if you explore nearby beaches.

Another alternative is to take a boat snorkelling trip.

Is Playa Taurito Good for Teenagers?

It can be but with a caveat.

Playa Taurito is ideal for:

  • Families wanting a safe, contained resort
  • Teens who enjoy water parks and pools
  • A relaxing, sunshine holiday

However, for longer stays, plan a few excursions or day trips to keep things varied.

I do think if I were taking my two teenagers away with just my own immediate family I would choose a more exciting resort for them. However for our big family where the teens had a group of other teenagers to keep them occupied, it was a good choice.
